Program Status Update

Global Innovation Week will leverage and build upon the 13th annual Grand Challenges Meeting (Oct. 1-4) -- one of the premier gatherings of leading donors, researchers, and scientists from around the world -- led by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (‘Gates’), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Grand Challenges Canada (GCC), Wellcome Trust and additional partners to be held in Washington, D.C. It will illustrate how innovation can serve the operational needs of an evolving USAID business model and support the new Administrator’s agenda around improved efficiency and effectiveness in development. There will be examples of innovation from the field and it will highlight worldwide advances and opportunities in applying innovation to the work of the Agency.

The Meeting consists of high-level plenary sessions, roundtable discussions, multiple tracks and complementary side events and is registration-only. Gates bears the major cost of this event and has invited USAID to build on additional open event opportunities to highlight and support USAID innovators and partners through a variety of partner-supported innovation events including a Marketplace, a series of investor roundtables and a deep-dive discussion around barriers to scale across the diverse sectors USAID works in.

Global Innovation Week will kick off with an Evidence and Innovation Day (Sept. 28), a day-long event focused on the nexus between evidence and innovation. It will feature development researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and social entrepreneurs engaged in generating and/or applying rigorous evidence. The next day (Sept. 29) will be a Scale and Impact Summit devoted to thought leadership featuring visionary keynotes and action-provoking panel discussions around themes of scale to impact in disaster and humanitarian assistance, global health resiliency, off-grid energy, and agricultural investment and production.

During Evidence Day and the Scale and Impact Summit, there will be an experiential Innovation Marketplace that will feature 100 of the most promising, high-potential innovators selected from across USAID’s innovation portfolios and those of key partners. This will include the top 10 innovations that have impacted the lives of one million or more people; 10 cutting edge technologies and approaches; and 80 from key sectors, including global health, education, and energy.

Participants will include approximately investors, funders, donors, implementing partners, private sector partners, policymakers, researchers, innovators and scientists from over 70 countries.
